The women in Susan Tepper’s novels (whether set in Berlin, London, Manhattan, or on cross-country road trips) prevail and prosper in corrupt and broken worlds, and enjoy their wit, and given talents (often as singers) by exploiting male sexism. In HAIR OF A FALLEN ANGEL the genre is what with Faulkner in mind, deserves to be called hillbilly Millennial. Janelle is a 20-something, natural red-head, who has come of age in her rural backwater, where she helps out in a barbershop, initially, and sings karaoke in a local bar. An older sister has escaped to Europe.. Her single mother has died. Janelle prizes self-reliance and authenticity, yet enjoys luxury with one of the town’s newly-rich hustlers, an alligator wrestler famed for a billboard photo where he seems to hold a giant gator overhead. He appreciates her promise, even after she steals his truck and heads for Manhattan. The author’s fun with dialogue, character, and plot at best recalls Flannery O’Conner’s.

Susan Tepper takes her love of language, imagery and pathos and weaves a beautiful story in her new novel, HAIR OF A FALLEN ANGEL,that will have you once again believing in the power of dreams and the doors that can fly open with hope.

Every character jumped in my face because they are so interesting and full of life.
Janelle, the protagonist, is such a great example of a real human. It's exciting how she deals with all the life and people that come at her. Makes it a real page turner. And it's perfect that the road changes her life. I can so see her mighty blue truck and her pal, Junior. I think this book would translate well into a film.

I read Susan’s novel in one sitting. It was an amazing ride - actually, the corvette and SUV’s took on roles of their own. Tepper drew nuanced characters of complexity and depth, each with their individual foibles; they surprised me repeatedly. I am awaiting the next episode!

I loved reading Susan IslaTepper's book, "Hair of a Fallen Angel."  Tepper makes her characters come alive and I got a good sense of their personalities. It made me really want to root for Janelle!
